Inside Bar Breakout Strategy: Does It Still Work on Futures?

An inside bar breakout buys when price breaks out of a bar that sits inside the previous one. Four backtests on ES and NQ futures, run on 2026-10-28, show where the plain rule loses, where it scrapes by, and why adding filters did not help.

Does the inside bar breakout still work on futures?

The plain version mostly does not. In four backtests we ran on 2026-10-28, a long inside bar breakout lost money on ES 15-minute bars, roughly broke even on ES 60-minute bars, and made money on NQ 60-minute bars, where a long-only rule had a rising market behind it.

That last result is the one people will quote. I would not, at least not yet. More on that below. An inside bar is a price pattern rather than a calculated line, one of many technical indicators and signals you can test, next to rules such as Donchian channel breakouts.

What is an inside bar, and which variants do people trade?

An inside bar is a bar whose high is lower than the previous bar's high and whose low is higher than the previous bar's low. The bigger bar before it is called the mother bar. The idea is that the market paused, and a break out of that pause starts the next move.

The common variants change one of three things:

  • Mother bar size. Only take setups where the mother bar is large compared with recent bars, often measured against ATR. A tiny mother bar is just a quiet hour.
  • Several inside bars in a row. Two or three nested bars mean a tighter coil. You also get far fewer trades.
  • Trend direction only. Buy breakouts above a long moving average, sell breakouts below it.

How do you set the entry, stop and exit?

Entry is either a stop order one tick above the inside bar's high, or a bar closing above that high. The stop order gets you in earlier and also gets you into every false poke. The close version waits and pays for it in price.

The stop usually goes below the inside bar's low, or below the mother bar's low for more room. Exits vary more: a fixed multiple of the risk, a trailing low, or the end of the session.

The rule we tested was deliberately plain. Long only. Enter when the bar closes above the previous bar's high and that previous bar was an inside bar. Exit when a bar closes below the lowest low of the three bars before it. No fixed stop, no target, one contract.

The ap_backtest connector of AlphaPrime (Valynox). Data 2018-09-02 to 2026-10-14, long only, one contract, figures exactly as returned. Costs are the tool's conservative setting: commission of $33.5 per side on ES and $14.75 per side on NQ (each including 2.5 extra ticks per side), plus 1 tick of slippage. ES 60-min monthly equity: 4,345.5 at the end of March 2025, 28,233 at the end of April 2025.

The ES 60-minute profit looks thin. It is worse than it looks. The monthly equity sat at 4,345.5 at the end of March 2025 and at 28,233 at the end of April 2025, so nearly the whole eight-year profit came from one volatile month. Take April 2025 out and this is a flat line with a drawdown. The periodic performance in AlphaPrime's performance report breaks a result out month by month, which is how one April 2025 stands out behind an eight-year total.

NQ is the interesting one, and also the one I trust least. This is a long-only rule on a market that spent most of these eight years going up. Some of that 209,385.5 is simply being long. I have not separated the two yet.

Which timeframe turns inside bars into noise?

On ES, the 15-minute chart. It produced 4,322 trades in eight years, and the average trade lost $101.65 after costs. Inside bars on short bars are mostly just quiet minutes, and every breakout pays the full commission and slippage. Conservative ES costs here are $67 of commission per round trip before slippage. A 15-minute breakout rarely moves far enough to cover that.

In my view, below 60 minutes a plain inside bar on ES is not worth testing. Daily bars are the other way to go, with far fewer signals and a much smaller cost per trade relative to the move.

Why are most "advanced" inside bar strategies just more parameters?

Search for advanced trading strategies for inside bar breakouts and you mostly find the same rule with more settings: mother bar at least 1.5 ATR, two inside bars instead of one, a 200 SMA trend filter, a session window, a volume condition. Each setting has a value somebody picked after looking at a chart.

We tried the most common one. Adding "close above the 200-bar SMA" on ES 60-minute cut the trades from 1,228 to 811 and turned a profit factor of 1.042 into 0.994. The filter did not find the good trades. It just removed a third of them, the good with the bad.

That is the usual pattern. Five extra settings with a few values each give you hundreds of versions, and the best of hundreds will look great on the data it was picked on. If you want to add conditions, test them in bulk and judge the whole batch, which is what a strategy generator is for. Then throw most of them away.

What should you check before trusting this setup?

Start with the checks in robustness testing for trading strategies. For this setup in particular:

  1. Remove the best month. On ES 60-minute that alone ends the discussion.
  2. Run the same rule on a related market. ES and NQ disagreed here, which tells you the rule is not doing much on its own.
  3. Move the exit from 3 bars to 2, 4 and 5. If only 3 works, it was picked, not found.
  4. Check it on data it never saw, with walk forward optimization rather than one split.

What does this mean if you use AlphaPrime?

Do not hand-tune one inside bar rule until it looks good. Backtest the plain rule on ES and NQ the way we did here, then let the generator search the wider rule space on the same 60-minute bars and keep only what survives walk-forward and a second market. If your hand-made inside bar rule cannot beat what survives, you have your answer.

Frequently asked questions

What is an inside bar breakout?

It is a trade taken when price breaks out of an inside bar, a bar whose high and low both sit within the previous bar's range. A long trade enters above the inside bar's high and usually places its stop below the inside bar's low or the mother bar's low.

Which timeframe works best for inside bars on futures?

In our ES backtests, 60-minute bars did far better than 15-minute bars, where costs ate every trade. Shorter bars give many more signals, but most are quiet periods rather than real pauses before a move.

Does a trend filter improve an inside bar strategy?

Not in our test. Adding a close above the 200-bar SMA on ES 60-minute bars cut trades from 1228 to 811 and lowered the profit factor from 1.042 to 0.994. A filter has to be tested like any other setting, not assumed to help.
