Backtesting software for futures: how to choose
The best backtesting software for futures depends on one thing: whether you already have a rule to test, or still need to find one.
AlphaPrime trial: 7 days, no credit card. Windows 10/11, 64-bit. Linux and Mac versions coming soon.

Which of the 4 types of futures backtesting tool fits you?
| Type | Examples | Who writes the rules | Pick it when | You also need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chart platform tester | TradingView strategy tester | You, in Pine Script | You want to check one idea on a chart today | A connected broker to trade it |
| Trading platform with a backtester | MultiCharts, TradeStation, NinjaTrader | You, in the platform's language | You already trade there and want to test and optimize your own rules | A data feed and a broker connection |
| Strategy generator | StrategyQuant X, Build Alpha, AlphaPrime | The software searches rule combinations inside limits you set | You have no rule yet, or want many candidates to test | A trading platform to run the exported code |
| Code library | Python, for example backtrader | You, in code | You program and want full control | Your own data, cost model and live connection |
What should you check before you pay?
- 1
Futures contract handling
Tick value, point value, sessions and the roll between contracts. A test that treats futures like a stock gets the money wrong.
- 2
Fills and costs
Commission and slippage per side, and whether orders fill on the next bar. Look at the trading costs in a backtest from the first run, because many rules stop paying there.
- 3
Out-of-sample and walk-forward
Can you hold data back and walk the test forward, or do you split the dates by hand? A single in-sample curve proves little.
- 4
How many tests you can run
One rule at a time, or millions of candidates. More tests find more lucky curves too, so more testing needs stricter checks after it.
- 5
What happens after the test
Which platforms can run the result, and do you get source code or a locked file? A strategy you cannot move stays in the tester.
- 6
The full cost
License or subscription, updates, data feed, platform fee and how long the trial lasts. Add them up for two years.

Where does AlphaPrime fit?
- AlphaPrime is a strategy generator for futures traders. It searches rule combinations, backtests each one with fees and slippage, checks the keepers with walk-forward analysis and exports source code.
- It runs on your PC and takes about 18 hours for about 1.2 billion strategy evaluations on one GPU, as measured here. Your card, data and settings change that figure.
- It is not a charting platform or a broker. Your own platform and broker place the orders.
- If you already have one rule and only want to test it, the tester inside your platform may be all you need.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best backtesting software for futures?
It depends on what you already have. With a finished rule, the tester in the platform you trade on is the shortest way. With no rule yet, a strategy generator fits better. If you program, a Python library gives you the most control.
Is there free futures backtesting software?
Yes, with limits. TradingView has a strategy tester, MultiCharts lists a free plan that backtests on sample data, and Python libraries such as backtrader are free. You still supply the data or accept the limits of the plan. AlphaPrime has a free 7-day trial.
Can I backtest futures on TradingView?
Yes, with a strategy written in Pine Script. The number of intraday bars depends on your plan, and its Deep Backtesting mode, on Premium and higher, reaches up to 2 million bars.
Do I need to code to backtest futures?
Not with a strategy generator, where you choose settings on screen. Platform testers need their script language, and libraries need real programming.
How much does futures backtesting software cost?
From free tiers to about US$3,000 for a lifetime license, as the table shows. Add the data feed, platform fee and updates before you compare two tools.
