How it works
How futures trading hours work
CME Group's equity index, energy, metals, Treasury and currency futures trade on CME Globex from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, nearly 23 hours a day: 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. New York time, with a one-hour break every day at 5:00 p.m.
Grain futures have two sessions: an overnight session from 8:00 p.m. to 8:45 a.m. and a day session from 9:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. New York time.
TAIEX futures in Taiwan trade a day session from 8:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and a night session from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next morning, Taipei time. Night-session trades count toward the next trading day.
Regular hours and electronic hours
Stock index futures also have "regular trading hours" (RTH): 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. New York time, while the stock market is open. The rest of the Globex day is the overnight or electronic session (ETH).
Volume and volatility are very different between the two, so a strategy tested on full-session bars can behave differently on day-only bars. Decide which one you trade before you backtest.
Daylight saving time
US exchanges keep New York and Chicago time. When the US changes its clocks (second Sunday in March, first Sunday in November), the open moves by an hour for readers in Europe and Asia. Europe changes on other dates, so for a few weeks a year the gap is unusual.
This page converts with your browser's time zone data, so the times you see are already adjusted. Taiwan has no daylight saving time, so TAIEX futures hours move instead when you look at them on a New York clock.
Holidays
On US holidays CME follows a holiday schedule: a few days are closed, and on many others trading stops early. On a holiday this page shows "Holiday schedule" instead of guessing; the stock market holidays page lists every date.

What time do futures open on Sunday?
CME Globex futures such as ES, NQ, CL, GC, ZB and 6E open at 6:00 p.m. New York time (5:00 p.m. Chicago time) on Sunday. Grain futures open later, at 8:00 p.m. New York time.
Do futures trade 24 hours a day?
Nearly. Most CME futures trade 23 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, with a one-hour break each day at 5:00 p.m. New York time. They do not trade on Saturday.
When is the daily break for ES and NQ?
From 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. New York time (4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Chicago time), Monday to Thursday. On Friday the market closes at 5:00 p.m. and reopens on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
What are the TAIEX futures trading hours?
The day session runs 8:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and the night session 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next day, Taipei time, Monday to Friday. Trades in the night session belong to the next trading day.
