CME futures: the usual pattern. CME publishes the exact hours for each product before every holiday, and on "early halt" days the trading day is merged with the next one (no settlement that day). Grain markets are usually closed on these holidays.

How it works

How the holiday calendar works

The NYSE publishes its holiday calendar years ahead, and Nasdaq follows the same days. When a holiday falls on a Saturday the market closes on the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, on the Monday after.

There is one exception: when New Year's Day falls on a Saturday, as on January 1, 2028, no holiday is observed, because Friday, December 31 is the last trading day of the year.

Early closes are at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time: the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve or the day before Independence Day when those fall on a weekday that is not itself the holiday.

Futures are different

CME Globex often stays open on US holidays and stops early, around 1:00 p.m. New York time, instead of closing for the whole day. Those hours count toward the next trading day, so there is no settlement on the holiday itself.

Christmas Day and New Year's Day are usually full closures. Good Friday is decided each year: CME has opened some markets for a short session when the monthly jobs report came out on that day.

Holidays in backtests

Holiday sessions make short, thin bars and gaps on the next open. Daily bars on those days are not comparable with normal days, which matters for strategies that use daily ranges or volume.

Questions

Is the stock market open on Good Friday?

No. The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed on Good Friday (April 3, 2026; March 26, 2027; April 14, 2028), although it is not a federal holiday. CME futures are usually closed as well; check CME's notice for that year.

Is the stock market open the day after Thanksgiving?

Yes, but it closes early at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time: November 27, 2026, November 26, 2027 and November 24, 2028.

Is the stock market open on Christmas Eve?

On Thursday, December 24, 2026 the market is open until 1:00 p.m. ET. In 2027 Christmas falls on a Saturday, so the holiday is observed on Friday, December 24 and the market is closed that day.

Is the stock market open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day?

Yes. The NYSE and Nasdaq trade normal hours on both days, although banks and the cash bond market may be closed.

Do futures trade on stock market holidays?

Often yes, with shorter hours. On most Monday holidays CME Globex trades until about 1:00 p.m. New York time. It is closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
