VWAP Bands: how far price has stretched from the day's average trade

VWAP bands measure how far price sits from the session's volume-weighted average, in units of the session's own spread. Plain VWAP only tells you which side you are on. The bands tell you whether that distance is ordinary or stretched, on a quiet day and on a busy one.

What it measures

VWAP is the average price of every contract traded since the session opened, each price weighted by the volume traded there. The bands add the spread around it: tight when most volume traded near VWAP, wide when the session swung around.

The formula in words: VWAP is the sum of typical price times volume for every bar since the session open, divided by the total volume, where typical price is the average of the high, low and close. The spread is a volume-weighted standard deviation: how far each bar's typical price sat from VWAP, squared, weighted by that bar's volume, averaged over the same bars and then square-rooted. The upper band sits that spread times a multiplier above VWAP and the lower band the same distance below. You choose the multiplier; many traders draw two or three bands.

Early in the session the sums hold only a few bars, so the bands jump around. They settle as volume builds.

How it behaves in real markets

On a rotational day in ES price keeps returning to VWAP and touches of the outer band fade back toward the middle. On a trend day price rides one band for hours and the fade traders get run over. Same bands, opposite behaviour, and the bands alone don't tell you which day it is.

Night sessions on index futures trade thin, which makes overnight bands narrow and easy to poke through.

Common ways to use it (concepts)

Fade

Back to VWAP from the outer band

Sell a stretch above the upper band or buy one below the lower band, aiming at VWAP. It works on balanced days and fails on trend days, so it needs a filter.

Trend

Riding the band

When price keeps closing outside a band, treat it as a trend day. Pullbacks to the first band become entries instead of targets.

Location filter

Don't buy what is already stretched

Use the band as a condition, not a trigger: take longs from a breakout rule only while price is below the upper band.

Pairing it with other indicator families

VWAP bands say where price is, not whether the market is trending, and that is the whole difference between the fade and the ride. I think a trend filter matters more here than for almost any other band; ADX or the Choppiness Index on the same bars is a reasonable first try.

Volume Profile adds where volume built up over several days. Bollinger Bands look similar but weight every bar the same and never reset.

In AlphaPrime

AlphaPrime has VWAP bands as built-in generator conditions: one family reads the session VWAP band, another a rolling VWAP band whose window you set. The strategy generator uses them as entries, exits or filters and crosses them with trend, volatility and session rules.

I'd run the fade with and without a trend filter in the same job and compare only the out-of-sample stretch. Try it in the free seven-day trial.

FAQ

Which multiplier should VWAP bands use?

No single value holds on every market. Test several on your own contract and session and keep what survives out of sample.

Do VWAP bands work on the overnight session?

They can be drawn there, but thin volume makes them narrow and jumpy. Many futures traders keep separate rules for the night.

What is the difference between VWAP bands and Bollinger Bands?

VWAP bands weight each price by volume and reset each session. Bollinger Bands use a rolling window of closes, every bar weighted the same.
