How it works
Initial and maintenance margin
Initial margin is what you need in the account to open a position. Maintenance margin is the level it must stay above. If equity falls below maintenance, the broker issues a margin call to bring it back to the initial margin.
If equity keeps falling and the risk indicator (equity ÷ initial margin of open positions) drops below 25% during the session, the broker closes the positions.
Leverage
Contract value = TAIEX level × NT$ per point × contracts. TX is NT$200 per point, MTX NT$50 and TMF NT$10. Leverage = contract value ÷ the margin you put up: with only the initial margin in the account, a small percentage move in the index is a large percentage of your equity.
Day-trade margin
For positions opened and closed in the same day session, TAIFEX lets brokers collect half the margin (rounded up to NT$1,000) on TX and MTX. It does not apply to the night session.
When margins change
TAIFEX changes margins when volatility changes, sometimes several times a year. This page shows the date of the notice it uses; brokers may ask for more than the exchange minimum.

Questions
How much margin do I need for one mini TAIEX (MTX) contract?
The initial margin in TAIFEX's notice shown above, per contract. Keep more than that in the account: with only the initial margin, a fall of a few hundred points brings a margin call.
What is the difference between TX, MTX and TMF?
Only the size: TX is NT$200 per index point, MTX NT$50 (a quarter of TX), and TMF NT$10 (a twentieth of TX). Margins scale the same way.
When is a margin call issued?
When equity falls below the maintenance margin of your open positions. You then need to bring equity back up to the initial margin.
Are these the margins my broker charges?
They are the exchange minimums. Brokers can ask for more, especially in volatile markets; check with yours.
